Sound Designer and Composer

This role is designed for an experienced sound designer with a keen understanding of how music, pacing, and sound can bring stories to life and elevate ideas. This person will know when and how to use music and sound effects, and will also understand when to have a restrained hand in using these tools. This person will also compose original music for our show, with an ear toward elevating the overall sonic identity of Hidden Brain.

The sound designer will work closely with the show’s host, executive producer, and other show producers and editors in bringing our episodes to life and ensuring they meet high editorial and creative standards.

What You’ll Do In This Job:

  • Create polished mixes of episodes from producer “rough cuts.” This includes work such as leveling, removing plosives, etc.
  • Serve a leading role in brainstorming with producers about audio elements, such as field tape, found sound, or sound effects, that might be appropriate for an episode. Collaborate with producers on the execution of this work and take the lead in using audio to develop scenes and moods in stories.
  • Create music for use on the show, including stems that can be used across multiple episodes to create a sonic signature for Hidden Brain.
  • Assist in the gathering of field sound as needed and ensure that we’re following best practices for both field interviews and in-studio recording sessions.
  • Offer input on sound design of other potential projects, including video and app development.

We’re looking for someone who is a fast, clear and graceful writer as well as a quick study when it comes to understanding complex topics. An understanding of audio story-telling and a background in one or more disciplines in the social sciences is a plus. We’re open to candidates interested in both part-time and full- time positions.

What You’ll Do In This Job:

  • Take interviews that Shankar conducts and write first drafts of stories, which may range from audio scripts to book chapters.
  • Identify and book show guests, based on Shankar’s guidance
  • Track down historical research and other archival information
  • Conduct background interviews or pre-interviews
  • Construct narratives using interviews and other reporting materials, some of which may be self-generated.
  • Fact-check stories for our podcast and radio show.
  • Other duties as assigned.
